There’s much to say about the seaside town of Pawleys Island. Partly because of its rich history, partly because of its beauty. The earliest known inhabitants of the area were the Waccamaw and Winayh Native Americans. They called the area “Chiquola” or “Chicora” meaning “The Land”. While the Winyah tribes have all disappeared, there are still a few Waccamaw Natives around today. Fast forward to today and you will see a modern, yet quaint town full of incredible restaurants, world class golf courses, and absolutely beautiful homes.
Located about 70 miles north of Charleston and 25 miles south of Myrtle Beach, Pawleys is a place of its own kind. Considered a sandy barrier island, the town is surrounded by water from the Atlantic ocean and on the other side is a beautiful tidal creek marsh. Visitors enjoy seeing the beautiful sculptures and artwork at Brookgreen Gardens and even a historical Castle located inside of Huntington Beach State Park. Locals even tell tales of ghosts and legendary pirates!
Residents of Pawley’s Island will notice there aren’t high rises and corporate resorts lining the shores of the town. That’s mostly because commercial and industrial buildings aren’t allowed (with the exception of a few grandfathered properties). This helps give Pawley’s a more family oriented, hometown feel. Surrounded by incredible restaurants, world class golf, and the outstanding views offered by the ocean, there’s no wonder Pawleys Island has attracted homeowners for years!
